Your refund rights for holiday flights

Busy travel days don't change the rules. If the airline cancels your flight, or delays or changes it by 3+ hours domestic (6+ hours international), and you decide not to travel, you're owed a refund to your original payment method, not a voucher (14 CFR Part 260).

Taking the rebooking or a travel credit generally ends the refund claim, so check before you accept. Meals and hotels depend on your airline's own promises on the DOT dashboard.

What you're owed under DOT rules

  • Cancelled flight: if you don't take the rebooking or a credit, the airline must refund the fare, taxes and paid extras to your original form of payment (14 CFR 260.6).
  • Long delay or schedule change: 3+ hours on a domestic trip or 6+ hours internationally counts as significant. If you then choose not to fly, the same full refund is due.
  • How fast: within 7 business days for card payments, 20 calendar days for other payments. You don't have to accept a voucher.
  • Meals and hotels: there's no federal rule. Airlines commit to them on the DOT dashboard only for delays they caused. FAA ground stops and delay programs are usually weather or air traffic control, which airlines generally treat as outside their control.
  • No cash compensation is required by U.S. law just because a flight is delayed. Refund rules apply whatever the cause.

Holiday flight FAQ

My holiday flight was cancelled. Do I have to take a voucher?

No. If the airline cancels and you don't accept the rebooking or a travel credit, it must refund the fare, taxes and paid extras to your original form of payment (14 CFR 260.6). You don't have to accept a voucher.

How late does a holiday flight have to be for a refund?

A delay or schedule change of 3+ hours on a domestic trip, or 6+ hours internationally, counts as significant. If you then choose not to fly, the full refund is due.

Does a weather or air traffic control delay still count?

For refunds, yes: the refund rules apply whatever the cause. Meals and hotels are different: there's no federal rule, and airlines commit to them on the DOT dashboard only for delays they caused. FAA ground stops and delay programs are usually weather or air traffic control.

Will I get cash compensation for a delay?

Usually not. No US law requires cash compensation just because a flight is delayed or cancelled. What the rules give you is a refund when you don't fly.

How fast does the refund have to arrive?

Within 7 business days for card payments and 20 calendar days for other payments.
